To lock a door or gate just click on it and enable lock.
To lock an arch you must target the arch itself not the blank space in between.

The door has the additional bonus of stopping toddlers entering by.
The sims 2 featured a download on a unofficial site that was a 5 lock bank door were a sim with a key could lock and unlock it but people without one couldent.
