This aluminum cap is the finished product and does not require additional asphalt shingle ridge caps. If your shingles are still in relatively good condition chances are that water seeps around a plumbing vent after replacing the flashing and boot you may want to add a bit of roof sealant if you had chickenpox as a child you might remember the itchy red bumps that covered your skin. Part of the problem may be that replacement roofs are often sold more as a commodity than as a craft. The shingles are installed over the base or boot.

Roof leaks around vent pipes is relatively common. Vent flashing is a cylindrical piece of flashing that fits right around the vent. To install shingles around vent pipe flashing and similar areas will require work gloves pry bar putty knife roofing nails and roofing cement. Consumers shop on the basis of price and many roofers sell jobs on low margins.

A shingle over vent is installed over the ridge of a roof and is covered over by asphalt shingle caps that match the surrounding roof shingles. The ridge of the roof is prepared similarly for both types of ridge vent. Second shingle you cut. An aluminum ridge vent has a mushroom shaped profile combined with a wide flange on both sides that sits on top of the roof shingles.

Shingle up to the hole. Apply the roofing felt on the roof cutting a hole for the vent pipe. A roof that leaks around a vent pipe is a common cause of small water stains on a ceiling or water leaking into a home. Apply the last row of shingles that is just below the vent pipe as shown in figure 1.

Plumbing vent boot flashing. Continue the next row of shingles cutting a hole for the vent pipe. The shingles were not cut carefully around the vent but were instead jammed up against the vent distorting the hood. The leaking may first be seen in the attic but if you don t catch it right away you may see water coming into the house dripping on the floor.
